As part of our Studio II coursework, we studied the Old Chicago Main Post Office in the South Loop. Our task was to create an artist's residency in the North East Tower. This project is the sister of the Architectural Intervention.
This project was my first true attempt at program mapping a space. Considering that the dimensions of the floor plate were approximately 150' x 70', there were a lot of ways to arrange the layout. In truth, there were over 10 initial layouts, and from the final one that I chose, I reiterated it 16 times. This was my first taste of IBC requirements, specifically egress points, and stairs.
The layout of the space was guided by programming needs, however, for the most part, I wasn't meant to stick to a budget or time frame (I will miss this when I'm out of school). This lack of constraint really let me get loose with the furnishing, and I do think there's a personal connection with the choice of furniture, featuring designs by Le Corbusier, Mies Van Der Rhoe, and Philippe Starck.
This model was made on Rhino 3D using existing floor plans.
