As part of our Studio II coursework, we studied the Old Chicago Main Post Office (or as she's colloquially named, the Grand Old Lady of Harrison Street). Our task was to create an intervention that would uphold the structure's original character while repurposing the program of the building. The Artist Residency in the North East Tower is her sister project.
I chose the bold, and in many ways, controversial design choice, by incorporating elements of parametric design and bio-design. For starters, the entire middle of the building was gutted out, creating a canyon, in addition, an amoeba-esque truss section was proposed to replace the flat roof, allowing a major influx of light to enter this vast building and light up the atrium. I also proposed a greenhouse on the balcony, increasing indoor space, but also creating an urban garden accessible to the public during the winter.
I employed a blend of traditional and modern building styles to construct an intervention that modernized the building's exterior while still preserving its historic character. The final outcome was a successful and cohesive architectural intervention that paid homage to the existing structure while delivering a unique and captivating experience. At least in my opinion.
The massing model was made on Rhino 3D using existing building plans.
